Sue emailed me and asked how I got the spiral punch to punch across the art journal.
I didn't own Stampin' Up's spiral punch until this spring. Once my friend Leslie showed me this trick with the spiral punch and the 5" x 5" art journal, I had to get one. I used this trick/technique to make my Recipe Book with the art journal. The SU spiral punch exactly matches the distance of the spirals in our art journal. But you can not just start at the edge and start punching. You have to follow this technique.
Cut your designer paper to fit the journal cover. The exact size is 5 1/4" x 5 1/4". (You can cut yours a little larger and then cut it down after it's adhered to your journal if you want. If you do that cut it to 5 3/8" x 5 3/8".)
- Line up your designer series paper to the top of the journal where the spiral is.
- With a pencil mark where the first spiral is and the last spiral is. (I mark where the far right part of the spiral is.)
Now. Hold the paper with the pencil marks closest to you. On the far right pencil mark, you will be cutting a small slit 1/8" wide and 1/4" in. This will be where the spiral punch guide is inserted. You can look at the picture to see exactly how big it is. When you are done - this slit will disappear.
- Now, turn the spiral punch over (I like to watch where my punch - punches.) Put the guide into the slit and punch.
- Punch across the paper. Stop when your last spiral punches where your pencil mark is. (It is 4 spiral punches across.) (If you have never used the spiral punch before, it moves across your paper by putting the guide in the last spiral punched. So it really only punches 2 spirals at a time.)
- After you have punched all the way across, you will have spirals plus your little slit on the end. (see picture.)
- Now turn your paper over. Now you will use the spiral punch to punch where your slit is by using the spirals you have already punched as a guide.
- Now your done. (I use SU's glue stick to adhere it to the front of the journal.)
- Let me know how you use this tutorial.
